Career Path - Degree or Sun Certification or ?

Hello,
Until recently, I was attending an online Masters program. I withdrew because it was silly-hard for me to keep up because I have very little IT/IS background and zero professional experience as a programmer.
I 'd like to become a professional programmer, I have a four year degree and I 'm learning Java & Python. In order to get a job as a programmer, hopefully using Java or Python, should I go to school and get a four year undergraduate degree like BS-CIT or should I take the CD classes from Sun and get certification for Java programming (all levels up to "programmer " status), or should I just continue with the Masters degree - or perhaps choose another path?
I 'm almost 50, so, I 'd like to do something quick - within two or three years, if possible. Also, I live pretty far from a metro area, so online classes will have to do or classes using CD 's/DVD 's.
I really have a passion for this stuff and I love writing code every chance I get.
Thanks,
SP

i think, it would be better if you take a short class and get sertificate from sun(if you want to be a java programmer). Cause you don 't have to waste your time in school. If you get the certificate from sun, you can work as a java programmer anywhere and you don 't have to worried about your background.
